Keeping a 4×4 for a long time can be a great way to save money. Sure a new car is always a nice thing to have, but with monthly payments it can be a nuisance and hard on your bank account. However, there comes a time in every vehicle’s life where it costs too much to maintain and it may actually be more cost effective and a better investment to buy a new one. But when is the appropriate time to do so, and what signs do you need to be aware of to make the switch?
Cost of Repair
One of the most obvious ways to tell if your vehicle should be replaced is if the cost of repair becomes overwhelming. If your vehicle is in constant need of repair, assess how much you’re spending and if the investments are better than purchasing a new car. A lot of people consider the car to be “dead” once the transmission goes out, as it’s one of the most expensive parts to replace.
The age of your vehicle is a very important thing to take into consideration. Unless it’s a classic or collector car, finding truck parts and used 4 wheel parts can be extremely difficult making them valued at premium prices. In addition, the age of the car can also mean a lack of safety features, ease of drivability and conveniences found on newer models.
Wear and Tear
Take your vehicle to your local 4×4 mechanic or auto service center and have them do a full inspection of your vehicle, the big and the small. It’s always good to have someone look at your vehicle in and out and see what may need to be replaced in the future. Everything from torn seats from rusty parts can always play a big role in determining how much money you may or may not avoid spending.
Some cars have been known to go up to 450k miles before having serious transmission or engine issues, but eventually there gets to a point where enough is enough. How is your car or truck holding up? You may blow a transmission or water pump at 150k miles, but if everything else is in great condition it may be worth the investment to fix.
Sometimes it may be hard to let go of a vehicle, but there comes a time when it needs to be retired. The best way to save money on your auto repairs is to keep up on regular maintenance and visit your mechanic as often as possible.
