2014 is bringing a new generation of fresh and updated offroad-capable vehicles. Traditionally trucks and SUV’s were rugged and simple but many have had more elegant features added while still maintaining their ability to perform well offroad. These vehicles are either new for 2014 or have been updated and are all great choices for anyone who is looking to add 4×4 accessories for their next adventure.
2014 Toyota 4Runner
The 4Runner has been slightly updated for the 2014 model year with a new front fascia, redesigned tail-lights and an updated interior. While this SUV from Toyota may not get as good of gas mileage as some of its competitors, or be as comfortable to ride in, many argue that it is one of the most capable offroad vehicles because of its body-on-frame construction. Toyota claims that because of this, it will be able to tackle many obstacles with ease where others would have difficulty.
The serious offroad enthusiast should likely consider the “Trail” model, as it is the most offroad capable. The Trail models offer a terrain select system, a locking rear differential, Crawl Control, and the ability to disable stability control.
The base price for the 4Runner starts at $35,000. It has a 270hp 4.0L motor with a 17/22mpg rating.
2014 Jeep Cherokee
The Jeep Cherokee is a new car introduced by Jeep as a smaller and less expensive version of its big brother, the Grand Cherokee. While this may not be the best option for the weekend rock-crawler or hardcore offroad enthusiast, the Cherokee is still very offroad-capable. In fact, many are saying that this vehicle will excel over any other crossover available on the market today when it comes to offroad performance.
The Cherokee offers three unique drive setups called “Active Drive”. Active Drive 1 uses an open power transfer unit and a variable wet-clutch in the rear-drive module that apportions drive to the rear wheels, disconnecting them when they’re not needed. Active Drive 2 adds the ability to vary torque that locks the front and rear together for increased traction. Active Drive Lock adds a locking rear differential.
The base price for the Cherokee starts at $23,000. It’s available in both front wheel drive and 4×4 models with a 2.4L I4 motor or 3.2L V6.
2014 GMC Sierra 1500
The GMC Sierra 1500 has received some updates for the 2014 model year including
a beefier front fascia, updated interior, new LED headlights and updated front grill. It’s also receiving a new aluminum hood for weight savings, inset doors into the body and an aerodynamic-aiding underbody cladding and rear–wheel spats. The chassis is similar to previous models, with a hydroformed front section. The old hydraulic assisted steering rack has been replaced with a new electrically boosted setup, which is supposed to help with fuel economy.
The Sierra now comes with three different motors, a 5.3L V8, a 6.2L V8, and a 4.3L V6. These engines all feature aluminum blocks and heads, direct fuel injection and come standard with cylinder deactivation.
2014 Toyota Tundra
The Tundra has received a redesign for 2014 including revised styling, different trim levels, upgraded suspension and a quieter and more comfortable interior. Not much has new has been added other than the redesign, as many of the features found on the previous generation Tundra can be found on the new one. The interior and styling is where many of the changes have taken place, including nice leather, more storage space and more ergonomic features.
The Tundra comes in three available motors, including a 4.0L V6, 4.6L V8 and a 5.7L V8.
2014 Ram Power Wagon
The Ram Power Wagon has been updated for 2014 with some extra features to help improve the overall driving experience. While the styling has remained the same, a lot of improvements have been made to the drivetrain to make it better suitable offroad. Dodge added a new three-link front suspension on the 2014 models to improve roll stiffness. This new suspension helps with towing heavy loads on the road without hindering any off-road capabilities. In addition, another major update is to the motor. The 6.4L Hemi V8 puts out 410hp (27hp more than last year’s model) and receives better fuel economy.
The Ram Power Wagon starts at $50,000.
